When work disappeared overnight

What happened?
The company I'd been with for years closed with almost no notice. I went from busy to nothing in a single morning.
What was the hardest part?
Answering 'so what do you do?'. I didn't have an answer, and I was embarrassed by how much that hurt.
What actually helped?
Getting proper advice about money early instead of hiding from the letters. And talking to two other people from work who were in the same boat.
What didn't help?
Applying for everything at once out of panic. I burned out in a month.
What do you know now that you wish you'd known then?
That losing a job isn't losing yourself. It just takes a while to remember the rest of you.
What happened next?
I'm doing different work now, for less money but saner hours. I wouldn't have chosen it. I'm surprised by how much of it I like.
